Faro - Capital of the Algarve

News from Portugal: The Forum Algarve Sopping Center in Faro will offer a pet-friendly area start open from July/August 2017, it is the first in Portugal and could be possible all over Europe! Our Laios as well as all his friends are well cared for, because in the planning animal protectionists and veterinarians were involved and who finally know best what our four-legged friends needs then them. All dogs, no matter what size or breed, are accepted there, while their owners can go shopping comfortably...

Faro is renowned for beautiful beaches and the Ria Formosa, famous for its Flamingos. Beyond the city of Faro is a flat fertile terrain bursting with green vegetation and crops and dotted with water wheels used to draw water from the land – a poignant reminder of the city’s Moorish heritage. In the distance the landscape is framed by hills clad with fruit trees. In the surrounding areas there are many traditional villages where you can still experience a pace of life reminiscent of centuries past. Here you can explore beautiful churches, historical artefacts and traces of Roman times amongst the countryside.

Main Church:
Built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval chapel, the church was rebuilt in the 18th/19th centuries under the guidance of the Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri. It has a neoclassical façade culminating in a pediment, and an interesting bell-tower. The interior consists of three naves and the altars have 19th century altarpieces. There are statues from the 17th/18th centuries, most notably of São Vicente (St. Vincent) and São Diogo (St. Diego). The pulpit is made of local marble. The church treasures include an in silver gilt and an embroidered (17th century).

Santa Bárbara de Nexe:
In the vicinity, the presence of a Bronze Age hill fort, which was subsequently used by both the Phoenicians and the Romans, shows how ancient this place is. The village is surrounded by fields and hills covered in fruit trees.

The long strip of dunes that separates the sea from the Ria Formosa is a paradise for anyone who enjoys sun, sand and sea. The visitors can choose between separate islands or mile after mile of sandy beaches.

Ilha de Faro:
Linked to the mainland by a road, this island has a small centre with beach houses, restaurants and other tourist facilities.

Ilha do Farol:
Apart from a few fishermen’s cabins, there is nothing on these islands but sand... There is regular access by ferry from Faro (in the summer) and Olhão (all year round).
