Lagoa

The city of Lagoa is about 6.5 km inland from the beautiful coast. The city has a rural flair which stands in contrast to the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the popular resort on the coast. Lagoa is situated in a traditional agricultural area, which is a major wine-growing area. The city is situated on a small hill, which rises above the plains where the lagoon once stood. The name (lagoa is the Portuguese word for lagoon) indicates that the first settlements were located in a marsh landscape, perhaps a side branch of the Rio Arade, which was subsequently drained for agricultural purposes. The image of the enchanting old town with whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets and the lantern poles decorated with flowers is dominated by the main church, dedicated to the Virgin of Light. The building of the former Carmelite convent of São José in the historical part of Lagoa is the city's landmark.
