Dolphins in the algarve

The dolphin - the smartest mammal

To see dolphins in the wild is on the top list of many people wish list. The good news: You do not have to fly half way around the globe for it. In the Algarve you will have the opportunity to see these beautiful animals in the wild.

Dolphin watching in the Algarve is becoming more popular and there are a number of towns along the coast where you can board a boat and have a chance to see the dolphin in its natural environment. The dolphin watching trip is a unique and unforgettable holiday experience for the whole family!

The rich coastal waters of the Algarve are home to several species of dolphins that we observe frequently, such as the Common dolphin, the Bottlenose dolphin, the Rissos dolphin and the little and "shy" Harbor Porpoise, considered a vulnerable species.

And here are some interesting facts about dolphins:

  • Compared to other animals, dolphins are believed to be very intelligent.
  • Dolphins are carnivores (meat eaters).
  • The Killer Whale (also known as Orca) is actually a type of dolphin.
  • Bottlenose dolphins are the most common and well known type of dolphin.
  • Female dolphins are called cows, males are called bulls and young dolphins are called calves.
  • Dolphins live in schools or pods of up to 12 individuals.
  • Dolphins often display a playful attitude which makes them popular in human culture. They can be seen jumping out of the water, riding waves, play fighting and occasionally interacting with humans swimming in the water.
  • Dolphins use a blowhole on top of their heads to breathe.
  • Dolphins have excellent eyesight and hearing as well as the ability to use echolocation for finding the exact location of objects.
  • Dolphins communicate with each other by clicking, whistling and other sounds.

Having said that, if conditions are right and you come across a pod of dolphins in a playful mood, you’ll find it an experience that’s hard to beat. Sometimes you can see pods in excess of a hundred dolphins. So don’t forget your camera!

Of course there is no guarantee that you’ll see any dolphins, although these guys are experts, and so the chances are quite high that you will. However, some companies offer free tickets if not see any dolphins, ask before you go.

A great experience!
